Panagia Philanthropini Center / Medical Services

In many cases of cancer, early detection is the key to effective treatment.

The main services offered by the Center include the early detection of breast and cervical cancer. The Center’s efforts have been organized on an entirely new basis and combine three factors:

  • Providing high quality medical services (based on EU and USA guidelines)
  • Implementing modern laboratory and software methods
  • A method to monitor patients

To date, over 24,600 women have been examined for breast and cervical cancer at the Center. Their re-examination rate since the Center’s opening is in the 90% range.

Mammograms

Approximately 20-25 breast cancer cases are diagnosed every year. Of those cases, 87% were diagnosed at an early stage and were successfully treated.

Pap Smears

The Center offers Pap smears performed to detect cervical cancer. Approximately 5-10 cervical cancer cases are diagnosed every year. Similar to the breast cancer detection rates, the majority of cervical cancers were detected at an early stage and subsequently were treated. In addition, about 250-300 benign uterine tumor cases are diagnosed every year. Most are surgically treated by competent local hospitals to which patients are referred. The Pap smears are evaluated by the National Cytology Centre of the University of Athens and the reference Centre for Artificial Intelligence Cytology at the University of Helsinki in Finland.
