Panagia Philanthropini Center / Educational Outreach

Educational Outreach

Through its educational and training activities, the Center has become an important channel for the dissemination of medical knowledge in many countries, particularly those in Eastern Europe. The Center is working to aid these countries in their efforts to adopt the medical and scientific advances of the Western world.

Local

Cancer and the Environment
Many scientific studies focus on identifying environmental and behavioral factors that influence health and increase the risk for developing cancer. One of the aims of the Center is to implement the knowledge of the interaction among environmental factors, behavioral factors, and health into cancer prevention programs for the surrounding communities. The Center's agenda is largely based on education and awareness, and include a systematic anti-smoking campaign, informing farmers and workers at local mines about the risks of being exposed to chemical substances, and educating farmers and workers about the potential harms associated with solar radiation.

Breast Care Education
Sponsored by the European Union and by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
A consortium of eastern Mediterranean countries has participated in workshops hosted by the Center on a semi-annual basis. Renowned faculty from breast cancer reference centers in the European Union and the United States work with representatives from countries including Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, Eritrea, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Turkey for three-to-five day workshops.

International Medical Programs

Programs have been organized and are in various stages of implementation:
• Azerbaijan
• Bosnia
• Egypt (Breast Care)
• Eritrea (Breast and Cervical Cancer, Malaria and Tuberculosis Screening)
• Kenya
• Syria (Breast Care)
• Turkey (Breast Care)
• Disadvantaged immigrant populations, particularly from Middle Eastern countries, in northern Greece (Breast and Cervical Cancer and Public Health education)

These programs include the continuing education of practitioners, as well as the support for the provision of services to underprivileged populations.
