The Ormylia Foundation reflects the will of the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra and the Holy Convent of the Annunciation, established in the Dependency of the same name at the Holy Convent at Ormylia, Chalkidiki, to make a contribution for the benefit of mankind and culture in the tradition of Orthodox Monasticism. For further information, download the text “This is the Day of The Lord”, where the father and founder of the Center, Archimandrite Aimilianos, presents the objectives of the creation of the Panagia Philanthropini Center through the Christian Orthodox monastic experience.
The starting point of this venture dates back to September 5, 1982, when the Panagia Philanthropini Center was founded one kilometer from the convent complex, thanks to the beneficent support by the family of the dearly-departed Ioannis Hadjipateras.
Until the beginning of 2006, the Center had been relying exclusively on the initiative taken by the two founding Monastic Communities, the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra on Mount Athos and the Holy Convent of the Annunciation at Ormylia.
In February 2006, the Greek state, recognizing the social and scientific contribution of this monastic foundation, passed a special law approving its establishment as a public welfare institution under the name “Ormylia Foundation” with the title “ Panagia Philanthropini Center”. The Foundation is a legal entity of private law and comes under the jurisdiction and supervision of the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of Development, the Minister of Health and Social Solidarity and the Minister of Culture. It is governed by the provisions of its establishment act.
